Can You Believe IT!!!

I have started planning Delaney's 6th Birthday party! Can you believe it! When I started this blog I was planning Delaney's 1st Birthday. WOW!

This year we are hoping the weather is wonderful for a party in our backyard. Her colors are Hot Pink with Black and White Zebra print. I am making tons of stuff from my stash for her party. This weekend I am doing the invitations. I will be starting on matching outfit for the 3 of us. Already made our matching flip flops.

I have ordered cloth table cloths and chair covers. Between me and my mom we have 5 or 6 of the 6 foot folding tables. I have 8 folding chairs and will be getting 8 more. It was cheaper to buy them than rent them. Plastic was only half the price and I will re-use cloth. I bought them at Table Cloth Factory. Their prices are CRAZY cheap!

Target has been very helpful too. They just got in paper products in Zebra with Hot Pink edges. In the Dollar Section they had square plastic buckets in Hot Pink and Black. I got those for the party favors at each kids place setting. Now just to fill them. I also got some metal Easter Pails that are Zebra print and Hot Pink inside.

I have bought 2 bolts of Zebra print cotton form JoAnn's. I cut 6 table runners today and still need to cut a square topper. My mom is going to hem them all for me. I am also going to make me a top, Delaney a dress and Daphne an outfit. I am also thinking of covering buttons and making ponytail accessories for all of the girls.

I am making the kids Zebra Cake In A Jar. I did a test run this week and it was so good! I figured out that the short 8oz wide mouth jars are going to be the easiest for the kids to eat out of and me to bake in. They will be topped with Hot Pink homemade Buttercream. I am also making a Zebra Layer Cake for the adults.

Delaney has ALWAYS wanted a pinata. So a friend is working on getting me one made for her party! She has a family hook up. I am thankful for her being the youngest in the family of 13!!! With her son an only child!!! Her family knows people everywhere or one of them works somewhere you need. My luck she is calling one of her family members in Mexico and having it shipped!

For an activity, like lunch and a pinata isn't enough!, I bought Make Your Own Monster iron-on art last summer on CLEARANCE! I have 13 of them too. I even found 5 white t-shirts in the bag. So each kid will go home with a t-shirt they made. I even have a Zebra ironing board cover!

I also have a HUGE pine tree in my back yard. I am going to make the Martha Stewart Tissue Paper Pom-Poms to hand from it. I have White and Hot Pink tissue paper already. I am looking for Black now.

I have tons of serving pieces in white and clear glass. Today I spray painted some terra cotta pots I have had for YEARS Glossy Black. This is going to be so much fun! Believe it or not I have tons of the big stuff on hand already. My big expenses are lunch, party favors and some decorations.

Heidi Daus Jewelry

This last summer I fell in love with Heidi Daus Jewelry. I have bought a few sets and pieces. It is so fun and full of sparkle.

My first set was the Reel McKoi. I love it! The whole set is so fun. Not that I wear it a lot but I love it. Daphne loves the Rose Elegance I got in black. She yells WOW!!! every time I open the box. Of course she has to wear it. My other favorite is Perennial Favorite. And of course I have SEVERAL pieces on my Wish List.

Of course I am on the Heidi Daus Designs e-mail list too. On Tuesday they put a new piece on special in the Tuesday's Treasures. Today's piece is a pair of earrings that I have been wanting.

These are stunning! And they are 40% off today! Of course I order me a pair.

I'm Taking A Class

I have been wanting to make a French Braid quilt for years. BUT I have never just bought the book and made one.

I was in Ladybug's Friday and saw the French Braid quilt on the wall. It is a CLASS! So I came home and asked my mom if she will watch the girls the next 2 Saturdays so I can take it. She said yes. So Saturday, in between the funeral and reception I ran back to Manteca to sign up. And guess what? I have a friend in the class!

I am excited to take this class. Now to started getting the ton and a half of fabric picked out to make the top.

Ok so I wasn't going to blog today BUT I found a Killer Deal on Swarovski Hot Fix Crystals. You can get 1440 of the same crystal for $37.50! It is a store in LA call the Bead Factory. You can go to the store or order online. I am going to try it soon. BUT I wanted to share with you all.

2012 Goals

As you know I don't make New Year's Resolutions. I make New Year's GOALS. I have made a few this year. Hopefully I haven't over done it this year.

Goals

1. To loose another 15.9 lbs. Yes I know it is a crazy amount BUT it gives me the next number I want on the scale.

2. Each month I would like to complete an OLD UFO or WISH project. I have a ton of things I still love in boxes that I need to make time to finish. Trust me moving them is just as bad as someone else having to go through them when you die.

3. Potty train Daphne by summer time. That way she can go on the Grandma Grandpa trip.

4. Train and Fund raise to walk in the 3 Day. I know I did it last year. I am hoping that I have as much support again this year. You have to raise $2300 and that always makes me nervous. I personally would like to have it done by July 1st so I don't have to worry about it the last 2 months before the walk.

5. I have 5 pieces of furniture that I want refinished. This will be the year they get done and in the house!

6. Use 100 yards from my stash. I know I have tried this before. BUT this time I am not limiting what I buy. Just 100 yards of the old stuff.

So if anyone is reading this what are your goals?

What I Am Working On This Year

I have always wanted to do a block of the month thing. BUT they are SO expensive. You pay $20 plus for the block and $4 a month for shipping and then the backing and you end up with a quilt that still needs quilted and you have spent between $400 and $500. I just haven't found one that I love $500 worth.

SOOOO. This is what I decided to do.

I joined The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery Dessert of the Month Club. It is $16.95 for the year. Yes you have to buy floss and the canvas to do it on. I think I MIGHT be in it for $50 for the year.

I am going to do mine on flour sack towels for the kitchen and on canvas. The ones on canvas I am going to put into quilt blocks.

I am really back this time!!!

Last week I got a FABULOUS new Acer laptop from HSN. Today the very nice Michael from Hughes Net got met Internet.

So I will do a little catch up.

I some what moved out of my house September 1st. I lived in a tiny house around the corner from my sister. The house was broken into 3 weeks after we moved in. I lost $2 and some change. We weren't home. I started looking for a new place. On October 29th we moved in to a GREAT new house RIGHT behind the Waterloo Club. My landlord is great and we love it here.

Delaney started Kindergarten in August. She loves it! Her teacher is wonderful. She has been doing wonderful in school. Delaney asked to be in the after school program and hates being picked up earlier than 5:30pm. At school she is in the dance club. This last November she started cheer classes at Gymstars. Her teacher Miss Melissa is moving her into a new class next week because she needs a bigger challenge.

Daphne is 2! She thinks she is 22. She is sassy. She does something everyday to make us laugh. She is smart! Just Saturday I locked me and her out of the house. Finally I was able to climb through the window to get in. I searched for my keys couldn't find them. I grabbed my spare truck keys and left. All afternoon I searched for my keys. Around 4pm she comes out with them. I asked her to show me where they were. She took me to Delaney's room and put them back in the Fisher Price Airport and told me "their!" Don't know why I didn't think to check their sooner.

A few general things that happened. We got side swiped the first day of school. We are fine. Then in October we got rear ended. The HHR was totalled. The girls are fine. My niece Natalie and I had some headaches and back pain. We are doing better now.

In September I got to was in the Komen 3 Days for a Cure. It was AMAZING. I got to see areas of the bay I had never been to. I met great friends. I also signed up to walk again this year. So back to fundraising! In October I got to go to Chicago with my friend Kymn. I also took a quick side trip to Detroit. I didn't get to do much their. I did see the Ford Museum and I got to have breakfast with Matthew, a friend on the 3 Day. November brought moving and getting everything hooked up to the house. December WOW! Are you ready for this? I had cosmetic surgery. It is something I have wanted for 14 years. I have looked into it many times. My ONLY regret is I waited 14 years. I should have done it sooner.

I will post soon on my goals for 2012.

I have not had a computer for the last 2 months, now I do again. BUT we are in the middle of moving. Not sure where yet, I will know more by this weekend. Scott is home right now. BUT will be flying to Dallas tomorrow for an interview. My life is a little crazy right now. BUT when isn't it.

Another Finish

Last year I won this sampler top at the Manteca Quilt Guild Christmas Dinner. I Chaired a new committee call Christmas Quilt Blocks.

My top has been sitting and waiting to get to a quilter. I FINALLY called The Merry Quilters and took it down. They did a wonderful job! I wanted a snowflake pano on it and it is done in a goldy tan thread. My binding and backing is the same fabric as the sashing. It is a cream background with gold snowflakes.

It is already packed away with the Christmas stuff and I can't wait to use it next year!

Quilts I Hate

I hate making quilts for family and friends that are sick. I don't mean the flu or common cold. I mean long term illness. I know they bring comfort and warm through treatment. I know they are needed and used. I truly hate making them though.

I love making a quilt for Thursday because the weekend can't get here soon enough. Birthdays, weddings and babies are good too. Retirements are fun. I love to make quilts for family and friends to push my creativity.

Two days ago I found out my best friend from age 4 to 10 was diagnosed with Lymphoma. They are still unsure of the type and stage. She is 4 months to the day older than me. She has a 19 year old daughter, 11 year old son and her granddaughter turns 1 this summer. She has a wonderful husband, family and friends as a support group to help her through this.

Without putting it off longer today I will go out to shop for fabric to make a quilt. It will be a quilt that is made with love, is needed and will be used. BUT it is also a quilt I really hate to make.

Kick Off To Summer Self Challenge Week 3

ONLY 14 days left to Memorial Day. I have to mentally prepare for it. The 31st wont get here soon enough!

I think I am doing okay on my Kick Off To Summer Self Challenge.
1. Lost 2.9 lbs
2. Will be starting Week 3 on the iFit. It is fun but I did slack off last week.
3. The weather isn't really working with me on the tanning thing. I lay out a few days it then is cold and raining. I have some color but would like more.
4. I have 2 quilts at 2 different quilters. I have one that I have half way quilted and the binding is cut for. AND the quilt I picked up last week I am sewing the binding on the back this week.

I am a work in progress!

I am hoping to work on the Pillow and have it ready to show you all next Monday. I am making 2 this year. One to give away and the other for me! Each year I want to keep the pillow this year I am.

Kick Off To Summer Self Challenge Week 2

1. I am down 1 lb from last week. Only 4 lbs to go!
2. I hsve been laying out a few days a week. I have some faint tan lines.
3. I am up to Week 2 day 3 on my iFit with Jullian Michaels. It is actually fun!
4. I started quilting a quilt last week. I am picking on up tonight from the quilter, just needs binding. I am dropping another one off tonight to the quilter.

3 Day Walk Update

This past weekend with the help of my family and friends I achieved the amazing milestone of $2300 in donations. This is the minimum amount needed to participate in the 3 Day Walk. I am truly thankful and humbled from all the support and donations I have received.

I will continue to fundraise to meet my personal goal of $3000. I will set monthly goals until I walk in September. If you would like to help me reach my goals you can donate on my page or click on the 3 Day image to the left.

I am close to my goal for this month I need a few more $5 and $10 donations to make it. Every donation takes us One Step Closer to a cure.

Sampler Sunday! 2

Ready for another installment of Sample Sunday?

I am holding off on throwing you a curve. Instead here is a fun easy block.

Many of you know that I support the military. I am joining in with Moda and their Just One Star project. Moda is trying to make 100 quilts in 100 days using this star pattern. Moda is asking for cream background and medium Red or medium Blue blocks. If you choose to make a block it needs to be in the mail this next week.

Now this makes about a 10" block so I am adding a 1 1/2" stripe to each side to make a 12" block for my sampler quilt. My blocks will be ready to photo later this week.

I challenge all of you to make 2 blocks. One for Moda and One for yourself.

Fabric Prices

Okay I was just thinking tonight while I was cutting off selvage what is going to happen with Fabric Prices with the disasters that keep hitting Japan?

In the last few years fabric has gone from $9 a yard up to $10 to $11 a yard. Many fabric manufactures have moved their operations to Japan. Many designers work with teams in Japan to get their designs and colors right before going to production in Japan.

Just this year Kona cotton has gone from $6 a yard last December to $7 a yard in March, that is the first time I purchased it this year. That is about 17% jump in 1 year!

Now if you are wondering who, I have a few for you.

I am not sure on a few others but I am sure with a little research you could find out.

As budgets are tightening I am wondering what is going to happen to fabric prices. For me at $11 a yard I REALLY have to love the fabric to buy it. I am working more on finishing my UFO's and not starting new quilts. I am shopping my stash before heading out to a store. I am using my scraps and not just storing them. Now I am not saying that I am not buying ANY fabric. I am pickier about what I buy. Instead of buying a half yard of 6 fabrics in a line that I like, I buy a half yard of my favorite that I can use with what I already have. Here is an example. This weekend I saw a fabric with High Heels on it, LOVE! It was white fabric with Black shoes and once in awhile there was a red shoe. SO ME!!! BUT they also had it WITHOUT the red, just white with black. Now I loved the one with the red, the one without worked better with my stash. So I bought a half yard of with one without the red.

Also I was looking through the Connecting Threads catalog today. Their fabric runs $5 to $7 a yard and is Made in the USA. Plus orders over $50 get FREE SHIPPING!!! Has anyone ordered from them? I would love to hear what you think of their fabric. I am thinking of placing an order.

I am making a Sampler Quilt! Who's joining me?

I decided that I have a ton of SCRAPS leftover from my Stars & Stripes quilt that I needed something to do with. I don't have much yardage but I do have usable chunks. I thought why not make a sampler. Most of the fabric is from an old Moda line "We The People." This next one is Red, Green and Cream. I belonged to a guild that I chaired the Christmas Quilt Committee. The idea was to make a 12 inch block in Red, Green and White/Cream. You bring it to the meeting and get a ticket to win a finish quilt at the Christmas Dinner. The biggest question I got asked in the year was "what block do I make?" I am here to help! Also my friend Bonnie is collecting 12 inch blocks in Red, White and Blue to make Sampler Quilts for Quilt of Valor. Photo of that block later in the week.

The block I started with is Four Corners from Quilters Cache. There are tons of free blocks on the site. I usually sort by size to find a block. This block was SUPER easy to cut and piece. It took me under an hour and that was with a diaper change, getting dessert and a phone call to mom. Next Sunday I am throwing you a CRUVE! Who's in with me?

With Friends Like Mine!

Who needs enemies?

It never fails that when a friend needs a partner in crime I get the call. This has been going on FOREVER!!!

A few months after college graduation a friend broke up with her boyfriend. I got THE CALL. I figured I was going to be the Designated Drive after all what are girlfriends for. OH HECK NO! Nothing that easy with this call. She needed someone to jump out of an airplane. Yes I went skydiving.

So no surprise last week I was talking to another girlfriend and she says "If I get 15 UFO's done I am going to redecorate my bedroom in pink and black. You should do it with me." UGGGGH! Okay...

So I walked into the sewing space and looked around. Well Once A Marine only needs binding, one done! Then Dazzling Diamonds was up on a quilter's list for next month so I pieced the back and shipped it out, sorta done. Now for number 3. Stars and Stripes.

Top

I have had this top done to this point for YEARS. Last night I was determined that I was going to get the borders on it. At 10pm I figured out why it has been in the box for so long! I never bought the fabric for the stopper border. That's right all that has been stopping this from being a quilt is 3/8 yard of fabric. After reading Vicki's blog yesterday I realized it is okay to buy a little fabric to get a lot of fabric used.

BACK
This is what I mean by getting a lot of fabric used. Last night since I couldn't work on the borders, I did check my stash nothing worked, I pieced the back. I knew I wanted to frame out the panel with the extra fabric from the front. I ended up using over 3 1/2 yards of fabric.

Today I did run to the quilt shop and buy 1/2 yard of blue for the stopper and we are back in business. I will have the borders on today and start the quilting this weekend.

Shipping Out

Once A Marine is done and shipping out. I am happy that this one is finally going to it's home.

Four of the Eagle, Anchor and Globes were quilted into the quilt along with a ton of stars.

Scott's old roommate in Iraq is getting this one. Frank is now home in Texas working for the state. And we are still in contact with him.

Rumors

Some of you may have heard by now a rumor that I am not going to be paying my 2011-2012 dues to Manteca Quilt Guild. It is true.

I am taking this time to explain why. Also if you want to speak to me about it feel free to leave a comment, call or e-mail me.

This is not intended to bash anyone but to explain my feelings and actions. I set a goal at the beginning of 2010 to help bring change to the Manteca Quilters. I feel I honestly tried. I was supported by many members in my efforts and genuinely thank all of you for that.

Unfortunately I feel like I am being Bullied by one member. I have had a few problems with this member regarding a few different issues. Other members have had the opportunity to stand up to this member and instead have chosen not to and bash me along with her. Those members have said good things to my face about the projects I have worked on but once confronted with the Bully joined her.

I have been accused that I have ramrodded my pet projects down the guild throat. In fact I presented an idea to the board, who approved it and then took the idea to the guild to vote on the idea. According to the vote ALL members present voted yes. It has also been said that I don't understand that just because there is money in the Guild's bank account that I cannot just decide to spend it.

I will say that 2 of 3 committees I was on did over spend their budgets. Let me explain.

1. Christmas Quilt Block Committee budget $200 spent about $140

2. Christmas Dinner PROJECTED budget of $900, that would be 80 members paying $10 each for dinner total of $800 and $100 from the guild budget. Actual was 64 members paying for dinner and $100 from the guild for a total of $740. We still had to buy food, plates and treat for all 80 people. From what checks we were reimbursed we figured we spent about $760. So yes we were about $20 over budget. Leftover food and bottled water was taken to the December class for guild members to enjoy.

3. Quilt Show Gift Baskets budget $0 spent $28. This committee has NO BUDGET. The Quilt Show Chair did pre approve both of the $14 purchases that were made for this committee. One was for 8 spools of ribbon for the baskets and the other was for buckets to hold tickets. I will also say that this committee brought in $1400 this year and we the committee spent 2% of that.

I would like to clear up one more issue. It has been said that I am a new member and don't understand how things work. This is incorrect. Although I am younger than most of Manteca Quilt Guild membership I have been a member for 9 years. I have also been a member of other non profit groups and do understand budgets.

At this time I do not feel it is productive for me to be a member of this group.

This does NOT mean I am going to quit sewing and quilting. PLEASE know that I am still here to answer questions and help my friends. You can call me and I will help you.

Pink Hair!

You guys did it!!! With the help of my family and friends I was able to get $750 in donations in 2 weeks. Since they came through I dyed my hair Hot Pink!

One Week!

With only ONE WEEK left in February I would LOVE to get another $210 in donations. It would take me to $1000. Right now I have $790 and I am at a third of my goal. I am VERY HAPPY for that.

I have already started my training walks. We are encouraged to do 3 miles an hour. I know it sounds slow but when the event gets here it is a good pace to walk 60 mile in. My treadmill also came this week so I will be able to start walking more at home.

I have had some issues lately and haven't wanted to finish anything for my guilds quilt show. I haven't sold the raffle tickets I need to sell, $5 will buy you 6 tickets to win a quilt let me know if you are interested. I don't want to attend guild meetings. I am over it.

Last year one of my goals:

3. I belong to a group that NEEDS change, I would like to be part of the solution to the change not sit back and complain that we need change.

I really tried to be productive. Many people said thank you that I did a good job. I chaired 3 committees and 1 was something completely new to our guild. BUT there is that small few that complained and then weren't adult enough when confronted to admit what they said or apologize. I am really feeling I need a break from the group. Because of this I haven't wanted to quilt anything.

SOOOO I bought the book above Quilts For The Modern Home Simplify by Camille Roskelley. I am in LOVEEEE. EVERYONE should go out and buy this book. I am totally motivated to quilt. I want to make them all. I am so excited to sew again. The first quilt up is Little Man. I will be using Alice in Wonderland by Maywood Studio.

My friend Jennifer and I bought the Alice tower about a year ago and have been looking for the perfect project for it. Several of the quilts will work with the large focal prints. Tonight I order a piece of yardage for borders and a piece for binding. Once the show is over and the fabric is deliver we will be piecing all night long!

2010 Health Goal

Last January one of my goals was to meet the Health Goal my work set for me. I got my results middle of last February. My lab results said I was completely healthy and to change nothing. It also said I should start to exercise and lost some weight. BUT they said I had no goal to meet. So I decided that since I didn't HAVE meet a Health Goal for work that I was going to set my own. I decided that I was going to loose 30lbs. Last December I met that goal and I have maintained that goal since. I think I am the healthiest I have ever been.

Now I have been asked "How did you do it?" Honestly, No I didn't have surgery. No I didn't take a magic pill. No I didn't wave a fairy wand. I did it with work. I did it with diet and exercise. I REFUSE to eliminate foods from my diet. I choose to limit the amount of them I eat.

My big diet tips are PORTION CONTROL and DRINK WATER!!! I tried eating High Protein and Low Carb diet when I did Booty Camp. My body didn't like that. I only lost 2lbs in 2 weeks. My body responds to portion control. I also drink Protein Shakes in the morning. I am not a breakfast person so the shake is a good way for me to start the day. I try to drink a gallon of water a day. I still eat Mc Donalds BUT my secret is I get a cheeseburger and split a small fry with the girls. Yes there are days that I get a Quarter Pounder with Cheese and a Large Fry but that is maybe once every 6 weeks. I have also limited my alcohol intake. Pizza and beer is a must once a month. It is amazing how long a 12 pack is lasting at my house lately.

Now the dreaded exercise. UGHHHH! I found something that I LOVE! Without Venus Pole Fitness I don't think I would have even thought of dropping the 30lbs. I started with Pole Fitness and fell in love. Since last July I have taken many classes, Lap and Chair Dancing, 4 weeks of Booty Camp, and some traditional Abs and Legs classes. I have been able to take classes from 4 of the instructors and they are all wonderful and supportive. Thursday night I am starting Burlesque Dance Classes. I can't wait! With the encouragement I have received at Venus I found DVD's that I enjoy doing at home. I have gotten out my Gazelle and have been using that.

Now my goal for this next year, to maintain. I would like to drop another 10lbs and I know I can do it. Right now I am more focused on keeping off the 30 lbs I already lost. I am also working on the training for the 3-Day Walk. I would never thought that any of this was possible for me.

What a weekend!!!

As of 1pm I reached my goal of $750 in donations for the 3 Day Walk!!! My family and friends are amazing. I wanted to have $750 by 11:59pm Valentine's Day, I was 35 hours ahead of schedule. This is 30% of the $2300 I need to do the walk. So PLEASE keep the donations coming in.

Yesterday I got to take two classes at Venus Pole Fitness. Diane is amazing! I got to take a Lap Dance class followed up by a Chair Dance class. I had a fun time and an AMAZING workout! Today I am sore I know that tomorrow I will be in PAIN.

Today I got to walk a 5k with my team One Step Closer! I got to meet a great group of women that I am going to love training and fundraising with. I can't wait!

After 5 weeks I am headed back to Venus Pole Fitness. I am so excited to be back dancing. I really miss it and my body craved the activity. Never thought that would happen. Because I am so smart I am taking 2 classes tomorrow for a total of 2 and a half hours!!! Am I CRAZY?

As if that wasn't enough I am starting Burlesque classes Thursday night. And since I am questioning my mental health I am taking the Luscious Legs class before hand too.

Not sure if I will be able to walk this next week. We will see.

Getting Started!!!

Tonight I am headed to San Leandro for my Getting Started meeting for The 3 Day walk. I am excited to learn more about my new journey.

I am busy training and raising donations. I set a goal of $750 by 11:59pm on Valentine's Day. Now if I make it I will dye my hair HOT PINK! Plus I have some friends that will take a photo of my hair and post it all over the place. Also one of my friends made a photo card for me to mail to help raise donations.

I have also joined the group One Step Closer. They do training and fund raising together. Plus we all camp and walk together in San Francisco.

I have decided to walk in the SGK 3 Day for the Cure in San Francisco this September. I am very excited to FINALLY get to do this. It will be A LOT of work. First I need to raise $2300 and second I need to get my body in condition to walk 60 miles in 3 days.

Today is the first of my Training Days! We will be walking 3 miles today. I have started a 24 week training schedule. Over time I will build up how many mile I walk in a day. The other good part is Scott usually flies in and out of San Francisco so I have opportunities to go to the city to train. San Francisco is the hardest of all the walks because of the hills, most of the cities are a lot flatter.

I Am Thinking...

I have been talking to a few of my friends and everyone is needing to down size their stash. So many many of us have fabric that we haven't used but don't want to get rid of. I am sure I am not alone in having a TON of scraps. So I am thinking of doing a quilt along.

I am thinking of a few different ways to do this.

1. a block a day, like a 9 patch
2. Three 12" blocks a week

Within 2 months we would have almost enough blocks to have a top. The third month for sashing and borders. Then using bigger pieces we would piece the back.

2011 Goals

So I have been thinking what my GOALS for 2011 will be. I have been thinking this will be the Year of Dianah! Yep all about me! It is going to sound a lot selfish and a lot egotistical but I do so much for others this year I am doing for me!

1. Maintain my weight loss. I have lost just over 30 lbs this past year. I am not sure if I want to loose more but I do know I don't want to find what I lost.

2. Sew 6 pieces of clothing for me! Some of you may know that I have 2 college degrees one is in Fashion Design and the other is in Fashion Merchandising. I rarely take time to make clothes for me. I buy the stuff, pattern, fabric, notions, thread ect but that's as far as it gets.

3. I am going with 12 UFO's again. Here is the BIG secret, I often take classes I WANT to take for something for ME. Then I get home and it goes in a box because I then have to get something done for someone else. I have already finished 1 UFO for me this year.

4. Try new recipes. I enjoy cooking. I LOVE Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa. Sometimes I feel like why bother the girls are just as happy with a corndog. So 4 new recipes a month!

I have decided that I will have a monetary reward for my goals. So each month I will get $10 that I maintain my weight. I will get $10 for each piece of clothing and each UFO. I am still trying to decide if I will do $10 per a recipe or a month. Now you might be wondering "what is she doing with the money" I am going on a ME vacation for my birthday, NO kids!

On the last day of each month I will post my progress on my goals. What are your goals this year?

Okay I am a little late. But you know what they say "Better late than pregnant!"

Scott came home for a fast pace two weeks. We did the traditional 3 days of Christmas and then we were headed out for vacation! We left New Year's Eve for Bakersfeild, a vacation HOT SPOT! We actually spent the night so we could get up at 6am and head to DISNEYLAND!!! We had a wonderful time. My parents met us their and we spent 4 days at the park. We drove home on the 5th to unpack the truck and pack Scott up to leave for Iraq on the 6th.

Scott did talk to the company in Texas and just because of timing nothing has changed. They are staying in contact and would like to fly out to meet with Scott the next time he is home. We are still hopeful.

Now on to the new year. This is the first year in MANY that I haven't spent New Year's Day making a quilt top from start to finish. I don't feel like the year has really started. Has anyone set any Resolutions or Goals? I aim for goals, I need to review last year's and make some for this year. Plus my blog-versary is next week, hmmm what to do.

Time Flies

I am not sure what we have been doing. I will hit some of the highlights for you all.

I was invited to share a table with a friend at her son's school Fall Carnival, to sell some things I have made. I am also making stuff to have a spot at a Holiday boutique in Linden December 11th. I am VERY excited for that one. I have been working on stuff for that.

I also finished the SoCal HHR donation quilt for this year. It was raffled off last weekend. I got it done start to finish in 5 days! It was CRAZY! I lost the pattern and had to make it up on my own. Then the drive to deliver the quilt ended up having to back out do to a family emergency. At the last minute 7pm on Wednesday I got a new driver. It was delivered to him at noon at a freeway off ramp.

I have been going to Booty Camp. It has been a bazaar experience. The final week of camp 2 of the classes were cancelled. We extended the camp a week. Then we were to do our final weigh in and measurements last Thursday and our leader forgot everything. So now we are adding another day. It is getting harder to go. It is about 40 degrees in the morning and we are working out in the park, it is windy. I have enjoyed doing Booty Camp and I am thinking of doing it again in the spring.

Delaney has lost a tooth and another one is loose. Yes she is only 4. I did check with a friend in the dental field and she said it is normal. Her adult teeth are already coming through before the baby teeth get loose.

Daphne has had the flu twice, I think it was from her flu shots. She is too little to get it in one dose so she got 2 halves a month apart. In between the flu she had a bad head cold. She now has 2 teeth and is trying to walk. She is extremely independent and a daredevil.

Scott has been sicker than a dog this past 7 days. He worked 2 half days and was out the rest of the time. He did go to the medic a few times and at one point was hospitalized. He was given MANY bags of saline, one day he got 7 total. Yesterday he was able to work a whole day and eat a few things, toast and applesauce, without throwing up. They do have something going around on the base.

I have been sewing but I can't share what they are yet. Soon.

So I have been addicted to EBay this weekend. I have reach my limit with my auctions today so I guess I will sew. I did win 2 auctions over the weekend. One was for a CD with over 1000 patterns from the Kansas City Star. I think those will be fun to reproduce. The second auction I won was this:

Lots has been going on this week! I will try to cover it all.

I kicked off the week with the flu. As of Tuesday we are FLU FREE!!!

Last Saturday I found out that a Booty Camp would be starting in Manteca this past Monday. I was on it! So Monday morning at 6:30am I was out at Woodward park thinking "What the hell did I get myself into now!" The two women that started with me on Monday have tons of exercise experience. One did 4 years in the Marine Corp and the other trained as body builder. I could hear the song from the Electric Company "One of these things is not like the others. One of these things don't belong." On Wednesday a forth woman joined our group, she is more on my level!!!

Tuesday Daph went for her 1 year check up. She is doing well and is in the 25 percentile. She ended up get 4 shots. This year she was able to get a flu shot. And since we were their Dr. B decided that Delaney could also get a flu shot.

Wednesday my aunt and uncle came to visit from Reno. I took the girls out to my mom and dad's to preform all their tricks. Tim and Mary sent Daph a cookie bouquet for her first birthday. It is so cute. I let the girls eat half a cookie last night.

Today Scott found out that he got a Foreman position with KBR. He will start the new job on 24th. We don't know if they will be making him change camps or not. We are still hoping for something stateside but are happy he is finally getting the pay for the job he has been doing.

SICK!!!

I know it has been awhile. I have good reason, we have been taking turns being sick.

Daphne started us off. She woke me up on the first at 1 am puking. It was her first time throwing up and she was PISSED! It was also her first birthday. We had 3 nights of puking with her. She is getting better but still running a fever.

Up next was Delaney. Tuesday night Wednesday morning I had JUST turned off the light at 1am and I heard a strange noise. Within 5 minutes Delaney was in my room because she puked EVERY WHERE! I spent the next HOUR cleaning her room while I had her in the bath. She is not full of energy yet but no fever.

Last bu not least I started feeling achy yesterday. I have had a sinus headache all week. The last 2 days I have been cold and achy. I really hope I don't do the puking part.

So if you are looking for me, we are laying low. I haven't been taking too many calls since my head feels like it is going to explode. If you need me, e-mail is the best. Hope you all stay healthy!

I am excited for this one. I am going to BOOTY CAMP! Venus Pole Fitness is doing an outdoor boot camp in Manteca! It is starting September 27th at Woodward Park. They are meeting Monday and Wednesday nights and again Saturday mornings for 4 weeks. I am very excited to try this out.

I have taken classes with Leslie and workshops with Diane, now Booty Camp with Grace. I can't imagine it being anything but FUN! Both Diane and Leslie have been supportive and inspirational through all the classes. I am sure Grace will be the same.

Where Did My Week GO!!!

I got VERY little finished on my Labor Day weekend list. On Friday of the weekend I purchased a pool table. Which means I have spent most of last week cleaning out my garage.

When I clean the garage I go through EVERYTHING. I have filled both of my garbage cans last week and on my way to filling them again this week. I have taken 2 loads in my Suburban to Goodwill and 1 load to a baby consignment sale in Roseville. I have also 6 empty 66 quart totes sitting in the garage. I still have a ways to go but I can see a HUGE improvement. I am taking the weekend off from the garage. Monday I will be back out their. I now have to find my Christmas Tree. I wanted to put my big one up this year but with Daph it looks like the Upside Down Tree will be going back up.

So this weekend will be spent finishing the top and back for "Once A Marine" for Frank, Scott's roommate and cleaning my house. I haven't touch the inside this week because of the garage!

One last thing Scott has a phone interview at 1am PST on Sunday. Please send prayers and good thoughts his way. The job is for the Carpenter Foreman in Baghdad. It is the job he has been doing without the title or the pay.

Last Weekend of Summer

Do you have plans for the Last Weekend of Summer? Not much going on here. I am making a list of plans though. There is a ton of stuff I want to get done. If I start my weekend tomorrow, I can make it a 5 day weekend.

Here's my list:
1. Steal produce from my parents garden
2. Clean out my Freezer
3. Freeze some Corn and Squash
4. Finish the top of Frank's quilt
5. Go to the Post Office
6. Tackle the shopping, Target, JoAnn's and Grocery
7. Start working on my chair (photos to come)
8. Piece a quilt back
9. Put up a batch of salsa

I am thinking that is more than I will actually do. Check back during the weekend and see my progress.

Stitching Sunday

I did work on the basket this past week. I did part of the top edge of the basket. I am hoping this next week to have the top edge and the outline of the basket finished.

I did finish (almost) this top from an OLD, 2003, UFO. After taking the photo I realized that the left border is pieced wrong. I will be taking that off, fixing it and putting it back on this week.

Pole Fitness Class

I finished my Pole Fitness class series this past Wednesday. I have been asked many questions about it. MANY QUESTIONS. I hope to share my experience and answer some questions. If you have a question PLEASE comment and I will do my best to answer it.

First, I took an introductory class at Venus Pole Fitness in Modesto for the first time last June. That first class was taught by Diane the owner. She was amazing! Her and her sister own two studios, Diane in Modesto and the sister is in Turlock. Both studios offer traditional fitness classes as well as pole classes. The was an hour and fifteen minute class and my legs were shaking when I was leaving. After leaving the class I thought "Not bad I would like to do it again." Then I woke up the next morning. I hurt (Muscle Sore) is places I didn't even know I had muscles. It lasted a few days. I wanted to go back! This was the FUNNEST workout I have ever done.

I signed up for Pole 101, a 5 week class for beginners only. Leslie was our teacher this time and was tons of fun. I learned so much from her. Again our classes were an hour and fifteen minutes every Wednesday night for the 5 weeks.

The first week you learn to walk, squats, hip stuff and how to slide down the pole. This has been the most demanding workout I have ever done, Billy Banks has nothing on these girls. By week 3 you are in 5 to 6 inch heels doing everything! Week 3 you also learn the first spin. Week 4 is more spins and sitting on the pole. Finally Week 5 a few more spins and climbing the pole!

Now it doesn't sound too bad right. Now during this EACH time we either worked on butts or abs. We did squats for 4 minutes, in 6 inch heels, to the beat of a song and if that wasn't enough a few times we would do a squat and hole for a count of 20! Abs wasn't so bad. I had to rest during that, I was having discomfort from surgery at times.

BEFORE you say I could NEVER DO THAT, a few more things. My class ranged in age from 23 with dance experience to 54 going on her third marriage. Also I was 20 days post surgery on my stomach AND 3 hours after having my stitches taken out. The first 2 weeks I was gentle about what I did laying on my stomach but that was it. Still by Week 5 I had internal discomfort but I knew to pay attention and rest when I needed to.

Some of the draw back is the bruising, pole burn and missing skin. I have VERY bad knees. This is not the best exercise for them but its wasn't bad for them. I protected them as best I could. My knees are bruised and beat up but I did not need to ice them or take pain pills. The pole burn goes away in a day or two.

These are my shoes and they are 6 inch stilettos. They do sell various shoes at the studio and even have a catalog you can look through to order out of. Their shoes are $45 to $55 a pair. I found my online for $40.

I would love to take more classes. There are only 2 things holding me up at this time. The first is the studio is about an hour from my house. The second is with Scott gone I don't always have the child care to keep taking classes.

At this time I don't have a pole in my house. I am thinking about the X Pole. It is not permanently installed and no ladder needed to put up or take down. Plus comes with a storage/travel bag.

Stitching Sunday

I am going to be forced into doing more handwork. Daphne is becoming more mobile and I have to be watching her more. She likes to pick up the smallest thing she can find and eat it. Which means less machine time.

So I started "Old Glory" by Crabapple Hill Studios last spring. I don't work on it much. So I decided that if I have to sit and supervise Daphne I will work on this until it is done. I will post a picture each Sunday so you all can see if I make progress.

I have tons of handwork in progress so maybe this will help me get some of it done.

Flag Quilt

I am loving this quilt. It is Stars N' Stripes by Glory Daze Pattern Co. The pattern is for a wall hanging and uses 2 1/2" squares, this is BIG and uses 4 1/2" squares. This one is about 48" by 86" Either size is just over 300 squares. If you are local Sandra Newcomb is teaching this at Ladybug. GO sign up.

I would like to make this again. It isn't very hard. I do recommend using fat quarters, lights and darks nothing that could be a medium, and cutting extra of each color. I had 2 colors that just didn't work for me so I had to use my extras.

I have been thinking lately that I would like to make a few quilts for Quilt of Valour. I know I don't have the time though. Would anyone one be interested in helping me? My thought is making Red and Blue 9 patches out of 2 1/2" squares. I would then sash and border in white. I would need 70 6 1/2" 9 patches to make a quilt big enough.

I'm Doing Something Right

Today we headed to Trinity Park to do some shopping. JoAnn's was our last stop. As we are at the back of the store looking for a fabric for borders on a quilt, a girl looking at fat quarters asks "Do you make Quilts?" I told her yes. She asked for some help, she was making her first quilt. He and her boyfriend we moving in together next week. I answered her questions and we both went back to our shopping.

Delaney came up to me once we were done talking and said "Mom we're not supposed to talk to strangers." WOW something is getting through that thick head of her's. Now if she would listen when I say clean up the toys.

I was able to take Judy Sisneros' new class Batik Blast this past Saturday with my friend Jennifer at the Manteca Quilt. I had a really good time. I was able to put my borders on my quilt today. Now to quilt it!

Sewing Again!

I am happy to be back to my sewing machine!

This week I am working on binding the last of the Cherry quilts for my client. This one is the biggest at a twin. I am hoping to have the binding finished early next week.

Earlier this summer I decided to make some clothes for me and the girls. I made me a dress already, not that I have wore it. So this week I decided to make me something else from the pile of fabric and patterns. I made a tunic top out of green printed linen. I love it! I think I am going to make another on. I am wearing the top to a birthday party tomorrow.

Yesterday I decided that I am going to start making a block a day quilt again this summer. If you remember back to last summer I joined the 9-patch a day quilt along. This year I am doing it on my own and doing a framed square block. I really need to use up my blue scraps. I will be posting more later this weekend over at Stash and Scrap Elimination Project.

I have my UFO for this month picked out too. I have a Mystery Quilt that just needs binding. So with any luck I will be able to get that done this month too.

All Over The Place

Okay this is scattered but try to say with me. Today is my first day drug free. I have to go back to work Wednesday and I can't be popping Vicodin like M&M's when I go. They have some crazy drug free policy. Go figure.

So to start today we took the girls for their check ups, they both got shots. So then we took Delaney to get Sushi and Baskin Robbins since she did a good job. I hate those screaming kids. I ordered Delaney her own roll on her own plate and the waitress looked at me like I was crazy. Then she asked "would she like a rice bowl?" I said "NO, I ordered her the sushi she wants." Really I am the mom shouldn't I know what my kid will eat more than you would?

I love this saying "You don't know how strong you are until strong is the only choice you have." Anyone know where it came from?

Tonight I could take a bath and change my bandaids. So I did. Now I am NOT a blood and guts kinda girl. Really if it were up to me I could leave the bandaids on until they deteriorate. I don't want to see under neath. Which is why I don't have a PhD in medicine, I have 2 Fashion Degrees. I changed the first 3 bandaids and was getting sick. They put some BIG ASS holes in me!!! I thought they would had a, the number one, stitch in them. HELL NO! They each have 3 stitches in them. After I did the first 3 I had to lay down before doing the last one. I finally did the one in my bellybutton. I just don't know about that one. So this comes down to I did it myself and didn't puke.

Last I found the Lone Star quilt I want to make. While recovering from the whole bandaid issue I surfed the web. I hit Minick and Simpson and found this!

This is the one I am going to make. I love it! I guess I need to finish a few projects first...

Recovery

Yesterday was the BIG day. I got to have surgery! I have been looking forward to this. Now I am patiently waiting to heal and have some results. No I did not have cosmetic surgery, yet.

I had 1 surgery with 6 parts to it. Here we go:

1. Lapascopy, they filled my body with gas so they had room to work in
2. Removal of the left ovary, I have been having problems with it
3. Look for and treat endometriosis, Scott can't remember if they found any
4. DnC, to prepare me for
5. Ablation of the Uterine Lining
6. Re arranging my intestines, once inside of me they found my intestines bunched up on my left side. It is possible that this was also contributing to some of my problems

The surgery itself took just over 2 hours. It was very long. I feel really good today, all thing considering. I am taking my meds as scheduled, I don't want to feel any pain. The only bad part was the breathing tube was in for so long that my throat and mouth hurt. I also have very little voice. I am eating ice cream, cough drops and soup.

Scott came home on Monday to help take care of me and the girls.

Winters Quilt Show

Saturday a group of us went to the Winters Quilt Show. It is a free outdoor show through downtown and more in the Senior Center. One of the Guest Artist was Mac McNamara and a special exhibit from Gee's Bend. The did have a featured artist in the Senior Center, I can't remember her name but I think it was Phylis something.

This is my Ruben Sandwich, we had lunch at Putah Creek Cafe. It was very good.

This is a quilt by the Feature Artist. It was VERY cool. Some of the pieces lift up.

Memorial Day Weekend Give Away

With this being the unofficial first weekend of summer please take a moment to remember the men and women who gave all for the freedom we have.

This weekend is always hard for me to get through. For those of you who don't know, a good friend of mine was KIA in 2002 by a suicide bomber. He was able to get his 13 men out. He died doing what he loved and what he believed in. He was in the Army's Special Forces, Green Beret, with 22 years of service.

So here is the give away part! Leave a comment here with what your Memorial Day weekend plans are, you have until 11:59pm on Monday. I will be giving away a Red, White and Blue pillow made by me. Last year was the Tattered Stars and Stripes pillow.

My plans are surviving the weekend. I need to reboil some jelly, it hasn't gelled. Bind and deliver 2 baby quilts. Whip up a batch of salsa. Oh and I have to work all weekend.

Like my life isn't crazy enough, my day has been insane!

I have lots going on. But here is just a small highlight, I have had a blinding headache all afternoon. I am not sure if it is the 5 hours of sleep, overdose or lack of caffeine or the wind killing my allergies. So I take 3 little white pills from Mexico and a Diet Pepsi. This only took off a small edge. I found some Allegra and took one of those too.

Tonight I had to go out to run a quick errand. I was talking on my phone when I pulled into the drive way, THANK GOD!!! I turned off the car, tossed my keys in my purse, grab some garbage and shut the door. In this time Delaney got out of the car too. I hear CLICK! I told my mom "I have to go now, I need to call AAA I just locked Daphne in the car." Of course I was driving the HHR that does not have OnStar!

My call was marked High Priority. They called out a Tow Truck and the Fire Department. Of course the tow truck got their first. It took him 10 seconds to get my doors opened. The Driver said "The Fire Department was called too. Where are they?" Me "Starbucks." He laughed and agreed.

For those of you who don't know, last week Stockton Police handed out 48 pink slips and some demotion notices. While the Fire Department is taking NO CUTS. And speaking of Stockton Fire Department they are currently 6 MILLION dollars over budget and are asking for more money to make it to the end of the year. Really can't they show up for a 7 month old locked in a car?

Daphne is perfectly fine and did not cry through the whole experience.

I am almost back

It has been a crazy few weeks. Last week I was sick and I am still recovering from that.

I have finished 2 of 3 of the cherry quilts for a client. I started the last one last week. They take longer than you think. I am hoping to have the third top done by the end of the month.

Other than that not much sewing going on here.

Delaney loves riding her bike when the weather lets us go out. Daphne likes going for a walk while Delaney rides.

Last weekend I got to go to the Foothill Quilters quilt show. They have one of the BEST guild shows. I bought vintage linens to make pillows out of for the bedroom make over. The only fabric I bought at the show was 5 yards of a large print for $5, if nothing else it will be a good back.

I am sad to say the Auburn quilt shop is closing. When I was their in February they were talking to people that were interested in buying the shop. The owners are retiring and they didn't sell. Also the Quilter's Studio is closing in San Carlos. That makes 3 shops that I spend money at that have closed this year! It is only mid April.

National Quilting Day

Are you ready for it? Tomorrow is the the BIG day. Yes the third Saturday has been marked as National Quilting Day. And no I am not making this up. It has been a national holiday since 1991.

Sew what are you going to make for National Quilting Day? Organize your stash? Finish an UFO? Start a new project? Make something for yourself? Make a quilt to donate?

I am still unsure of what I am really going to make. I need to make another baby quilt for my client. I need to finish my one UFO this month. My sewing space needs cleaned up and some organizing. BUT I really want to try a new to me applique technique.

I NEED a new sewing studio. I have to give up my old one so Daphne would have a place to sleep. My current sewing space is just too small for me. I am sharing the living room/home gym/sewing space. It really is too much to fit into one room.

IF I can talk my dad into it. IF I can get Scott home long enough to build it. I would like a small 1000 square feet sewing studio. It will need a full bath, kitchenette, and detached garage (not included in the 1000 square feet.) I want lots of windows, for natural light. Of course laminate flooring, easy to clean. I also need built in shelving, cupboards and counters. I will need a spot for my sewing machine and my serger. I would like 10 foot ceilings with a library ladder on my design wall.

Dad I don't want to look at the packing shed IF you could please plant a flower garden so I have something to look at out the window. And Scott IF you could please order up that computerized Gammil for me, I should have plenty of room.

IF only IF...

***Since my mom and Jennifer are concerned about space for the kids and the nanny, no worries. My darling children aren't allowed into my new studio. When we pull into the detatched garage they will promply walk across the field to visit with their Grandma and Grandpa to spend wonderful quality time.***

How I Do It ALL

Okay I get asked "how do you do it all?" I am going to share a few secrets. I am including a few bonuses too.

I am up at 4:30am, yes it is still dark out. If it is a week day my sitter is at my house by 5:10 am, if it is a weekend me and the girls are in the car by 4:50am. I have my clothes for work ready the night before and their bag packed.

I am home from work between 9 and 10 am, I have the whole day ahead of me. Today I grabbed the slow cooker and started dinner. First is the most important step line the slow cooker with a Reynolds Slow Cooker liner, this will save you scrubbing and time later. Next is the food, HIGHLY complicated recipe!!!

Southwest Pot Roast
4-6 Red Potatoes (as many as you need for the people you are feeding)
1 bag of pre peeled Carrots (I buy the 16oz bag)
1 Chuck Roast (again as much as you need for the people you are feeding)
some flour
1 16oz jar of Salsa (I use Pace medium)

Dump your potatoes and carrot in the slow cooker. Flour your pot roast and plop it on the veggies. Last dump the salsa on top of the meat. Cook on low for 8 hours.

This dinner takes me less than 5 minutes. If I feel like it I might even bust open a roll of Pillsbury biscuits. Home cooking at it's finest.

While I do this I toast up a bagel for Delaney too. Multitasking is the key to my day! I run laundry all day one day a week. Delaney has to help sort her laundry into my laundry. Daphne's gets done separate. Delaney and I load the wash together. I only switch laundry when I get up for a Diet Pepsi or Bathroom break. I have 5 laundry baskets, one for each of us and one for the house. Clean stuff goes into them and I fold one at a time while I am on the phone. Whole basket goes to the room it needs to be put away in.

Another key to my day is I DO NOT WATCH TV! I can't believe how much time that frees up. Yes I have a tv in my sewing space. I use it for dvd's only. I will play Dallas for the noise or a workout dvd when I feel like it.

All of this leaves me tons of time to sew. I keep projects together in bags or boxes. I make sure the fabric, pattern, thread, notions, ect is all their. That way I can grab something and sew. I keep a list of project that need to be done each week. I also keep a list of what I want to get done in the month. If I start a project and have to put it away I put a note in the box with where I left off. I NEVER LEAVE OFF I THE MIDDLE OF A STEP!

I have to stay organized. I have my bag out that I take to the guild meeting. As I finish stuff that has to go to the meeting in the bag it goes. I have 2 large storage boxes in my sewing space too. One is for gifts I make, as I finish a gift it goes into the box with a paper of who it is for. I also mark on my calendar that I have made a gift for that person on the month they are to receive it. Example I have made something for my sister, her birthday is in August, in the empty space on the August page of my calendar I noted that I have made her gift already. That way I know to go look in the box. The second box is for stuff I am putting in the guild's boutique. As I come across fabric, patterns, notions, ect I no longer want I toss them into the box. Then when it is time for the show I just have to price stuff.

While I feed Daphne I will read a pattern. That way I am ahead of the game when I go to sew. I also can pre plan any changes I want to make.

The biggest things for me is having a plan, being organized, and using every minute of my time to the most.

This past month has been full. We have been getting ready for Delaney's 4th birthday! And Scott coming home for a visit. Can we go back to January, I need more time. Let's see if I can hit some highlights of the last 4 weeks.

Made Delaney's birthday dress and currently working on sewing up the last 3 party favor bags. Yeah I know. If I have time tonight Daphne will also get a matching outfit for tomorrow's party.

I did finish 3 quilts this month and 2 of them were UFO's! I am hoping to get one more done by Sunday but I am not holding my breath.

Daphne had her 4 month check up and all is good. She is in the 50% range which is a big change from Delaney who was always 95%. Daphne is a good baby.

Scott got home last Friday. Saturday we did a quick sprint through the de Young to see the Amish quilts. The exhibit was great, the staff was so rude it blew my mind. That night we went to a crab feed for my niece's school. Sunday morning I was up early finishing a donation for a bowling fundraiser and then we were off to Reno for a few days.

A friend joined us in Reno. The guys got to snowboard one day and I got binding on 2 quilts. I also made a pair of Corvette pillowcases for me. I did get to shop at both of the quilt shops in Reno and want to go back in March for a class. Still trying to figure that one out.

Thursday was our first real day at home. I sewed for Delaney's birthday and Scott hung out with the kids. We also got to attend our niece's play The Wizard of Oz, all three were in the play. Last night was also the quilt guild meeting. This was the first month to turn in blocks for the Christmas Quilt Committee, which I am the Chairman of. So far I have 25 blocks, enough for one quilt and a block for the second.

Today is being spent finishing stuff for tomorrow's party. Scott and Delaney are out ordering the pizza and I am home sewing stuff and baking cupcakes. I will try to post pictures Sunday.

Pillow Cases

I just figured out that I took pictures of the dozen pillow cases I made. The first five are from my stash and going to the Eagle Scout project. The second five are kits that were donated by Ladybug Quilts. And the last two are gifts, one for Ang and the other for Nat.

I don't know where to start. The last 2 weeks are a blure. See if I can remember parts of it. I do have photos.

First my friend Kim's son is at Stanford. Josh has Cystic Fibrosis and his lungs were down to 12% and with that his Oxygen and CO2 levels were completely crazy. A week ago Josh was put on the double lung transplant list. He is number one. Last Friday was his birthday and he turn 26. If you live in the Stockton area Chili's in Stockton is helping with a fundraiser for Josh. All you have to do is print the flyer and go eat at Chili's on Feb 1st. Everyone that eats their and turns in a flyer 10% will go to helping Josh and his wife. Go visit I Support Joshua Mompean on facebook. You can print the flyer here.

I had a fun photo session with Heather of Moomp Photography. I am waiting for her to give me the okay to promote her latest thing. Just wait you'll love it! Speaking of Moomp spring is coming have you have a family photo done recently, like in the last decade? Call Heather make an appointment. Grab you spouse, kids and grandkids (she'll do your pets too) and head out to meet Heather. You will have the best time with your family and be a head of the game for Christmas photos! Yes I know it is January and I am talking Christmas photos but really come fall you'll be lucky to get a session with her.

I got Delaney's Garden Party Dress done. Delaney has a mini session with Heather tomorrow, I am doing photo invitations for her birthday. Now to start the party favor bags. I have also eliminated a UFO. I decided that I was never going to make the quilt. It was a sample for a class I was going to teach that didn't come about. I had 5 1/2 blocks made. I finished the last block and disbursed the remaining fabric into my stash. I put 2 blocks into my new endeavor for the quilt guild and with the other 4 I made placemats. I found Vicki's wonderful Orphan Block Placemat Tutorial over at 3 Creative Studios. I have also made a Halloween quilt top out of the 9 patches from the swap I did last fall. I cut them in half and made a Disappearing 9 Patch. I love it. The bonus is JoAnn's had Halloween fabric on sale 60% off. I was able to get the borders and backing for $2.79 a yard!!!

Right now I am still finishing my Calendar Men quilt. I am hoping to have that done this week. I am working on finishing up my January row for my row quilt. Also I got the sneak peak for Febuary's Block Lotto. I love it so much! I already have one done. I am hoping to be able to get a few more before the first too.

Yesterday was my Blog-A-Versary. I missed it. Now how funny is that? So three years ago I started What Are They Doing Now. It is hard to believe how time flies.

This year I am not going to do a reader give away. But I am going to give a quilt away to a local group. Not to sure yet who. I am going to see what strikes me to make this weekend and then decide where it is going. I am also going to give away 6 pillow cases for ConKerr Cancer for the Eagle Scout project.

This next year I challenge all my readers to DO something to make a difference. Donate a quilt or pillow cases to a group that can use them. DO something more than say you support a group give your time or talents to show your support. If your not sure who you want to support here are some that I help:

Goals For 2010

I have made a few goal for this year. Heck I do it every year. Sometimes I even work towards achieving them. So I thought I would share some of my goals for the year.

1. Work on decluttering the house. One trip (big or small) a month to donate to Goodwill.

2. Push myself Creatively. I want to work with new colors, textures and designs.

3. I belong to a group that NEEDS change, I would like to be part of the solution to the change not sit back and complain that we need change.

4. Finish 1 UFO a month.

5. I would like to PIF (Pay It Forward) 6 sewn items this year. Watch your mail boxes!

6. Meet whatever Health Goal my work sets for me. I wont know what it is until late Feb early March.

7. Complete 2 handwork projects this year.

Starry Night

These are the Milky Way blocks I won at Block Lotto. It was the October block. I received them in the mail in November and December. I finished getting the borders on it yesterday. I have 2 tops done so far this year. Now just to get a whole quilt done.

Every year on New Year's Day I make a quilt top. Even with Scott gone I was going to give my best at getting a top done. I made the blocks, laid them on my wall and started the graph on the 31st. I came home from work New Year's Day finished the graph and started sewing. Even with all the interruptions I was done by 7pm.

The Tic Tac Toe block is this months block over at Block Lotto. I fell in love with the block and knew I wanted to make this quilt. I love the liberated setting with the liberated block. This is out of the box for me. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.

I have another idea for a quilt using this block and a variation of the block. Soon.

And you thought that I was done with Straight No Chaser. They will be touring this spring the closest they are getting to Stockton is Fresno. I would really like to see them. They will also be at the Grove in Anaheim. I could fly down after work, go to the concert, stay the night and fly back the next day.

Scott has already brought in the New Year. He was able to celebrate it by running back and forth from the bomb shelter. When talked to him at 9:30am they had had 6 bombs come in with more on the way. Almost like being at home. Here we will be counting the gun fire.

I told you I am loving these guys. Really go buy the CD it is worth it. The only down side is Delaney told someone they were singing the 12 days of Christmas wrong because they didn't sing it like SNC. Oh well.

I still have a little left to do. Today we will be hitting the post office and mailing the last of the cards, Ralley's for food I forgot to buy and then wrapping presents. We will be going to my aunt's tonight for my mom's sides Christmas. Tonight I will be up assembling an Art Tower and downloading books to a Tag Reading System. I might sleep sometime.

Not much left to do around here. I need to finish the Christmas cards, buy a toothbrush for Delaney, wrapped gifts and maybe go to Ladybug quilt shop.

Delaney just knows Santa is bringing her a Little Mermaid Spinning Toothbrush. Of course Target only had Cinderella last night so now I have to hit every WalGreens I can find. Plus I have WalGreens Rewards money to spend by the 26th. So it will be a free toothbrush.

If you don't know LAdybug is having a pre-Christmas sale. They have Christmas patterns 50% off. When I was their last week I saw a few I wanted. Let's see if I can make it.

I am loving this group, Straight No Chaser.

I delivered the client quilt today. She is very happy with it. She will be sending me a photo of it once it is opened on Christmas. I will share it with all of you when I get it.

I have decided that all I am getting done between now and Christmas is the cards that need to be addressed and mailed and wrapping gifts. Everything else is waiting until next year.

The Colors of My Life

With both of my degrees I have taken a few color class. I have take Color Theory and Psych of Color and something to do with kids and color. Working with color has always been easy for me. Heck I have 15 different colors of paint in my house.

I am talking about different colors today though. On the freeway today I saw the back of a trailer and knew where it was from just by the color. I am going to share a few of the colors of my life with you all today.

I will tell you that we saw 3 trucks today all together in Bragg Goldenrod. The better part was they were coming out of the yard in Reno, one truck was a sub hauler and had that info on the door. My uncle runs Bragg Reno. The lead truck was a crane I have no clue what the other two truck were hauling.

Life Happens At Midnight

I just got a message from a friend asking why I am still up? Life happens at midnight was my answer.

I missed turning off the TV in time, and the Phin and Ferb Christmas Special came on. Delaney has been waiting 2 weeks to see it. It was on at 8pm but she was at a Christmas party with Gram and Papa. When she got home she finished watching another show then it was supposed to be time for bed. I gave in. She didn't get to bed until 11:30pm.

In the mean time I am doing load number 6 of today's laundry. I might as well stay up and get another load in. The one coming out also needs folded. What the heck I am up.

Plus tomorrow is the big day, we are going to Old Sac with friends to ride the Polar Express. I need to get the gifts wrapped that we need to take with us. Also 2 of the kids had birthdays in October and I need to put the finishing touches on their birthday presents. What the heck I am up.

Since we are going to Old Sac, what a perfect place for a toy drop for the Toy Society. Now I just need to make a toy. I think I want to try for making a snowman. I have plenty of time we don't have to leave until 2pm tomorrow. But I have no time in the morning for this. What the heck I am up, I'll do it tonight.

Christmas Giving On A Budget

This year most of us are on a tighter budget than in years past. Which makes our gifting giving a little more creative. I am going to share some ideas for the people on your list and giving to those less fortunate.

First, give a gift to a whole family rather than buying each individual a gift. Give them a family night gift. You can create a gift basket with a movie or game theme. The new Harry Potter movie came out yesterday and is $15 at Target. Combine your movie with a few bags a microwave popcorn, 2 liter of soda and a couple boxes of movie candy (WalGreens has 3 boxes for $3). Package this all up in a plastic bowl you can pick up at a dollar type store. You can keep this gift between $20 and $25. Another idea is a game night, Steals and Deals posted about getting games inexpensive at Kmart this week. Combine a game and junk food and you got a great gift for the whole family.

Another idea is to stretch your baking with gifts to be used when the food is gone. Here is the idea instead of overloading on baking, who really has the time, whip up a few potholders from my tutorial. One yard of fabric will make you 4 potholders and they take no time at all. For those with a little more time and sewing skills make a matching apron. I found this apron in an hour tutorial. It is very cute, I think I am going to try it!

Most of use give to those less fortunate than ourselves at this time of year. The bad news is some of us are close to being less fortunate this year too. So here are a few ways to give to others that wont break the bank. If you usually adopt a family, why not ask a few friends to adopt a family with you. You each buy a gift for a member of the family.

Also the Toy Society has a big Christmas drop each year. All you do is join their group, they e-mail you the link to the letter to print to enclose with your toy, make a toy and drop it for someone to find the weekend before Christmas. ALL of my toys have been made from scraps, with the exception of the felt I bought.

Another idea is make a donate a pillowcase. I know of two different groups doing this. First is Jackie over at Canton Village Quilt Works sent out a call to help donate 2000 pillowcases to the Hole In The Wall Gang. If you are local and would like to send pillowcases to Jackie's group I will be mailing my box by Jan 15th and would love to include yours in the box. So far I have 12 going to Jackie, 6 made by my friend Bonnie and 6 by me. The other group is American Patchwork and Quilting is looking for 1 million pillowcases to be donated, to the cause of your choice. They also have a few different tutorials on how to make different pillowcases. I will also be posting a tutorial in the next 24 hours on how I make mine with no exposed seams, tons of photos.

Here is my last idea, it is for soldiers serving overseas. There is a group in Stockton that sends boxes to soldiers year around. The group is called Packed with Pride. They have a list of items that you can donate that they will ship in the boxes or you can make a monetary donation. Each box that is shipped cost $8.95.

Toy Drop #2

I dropped off a snake at the Downtown Stockton Public Library in the children's section. The library was quiet so it wasn't a problem to find a spot for my snake and take a photo. I had both girls with me, Delaney was busy reading and playing.

This snake is super easy to make and took no time at all. It is leftover strips from my Bento Box quilt pieced together with a white strip on each end. I folded my strip piece in half, I drew a curve on one end and a triangle on the other. (curve for head and triangle for tail) I started sewing at the fold, around the head and down the side. About half way down the side I left an opening for turning and stuffing. I continued down the side, around the tail and to the fold. A little trimming and flip. Next sew on the eyes, stuff and sew hole closed. Mr Snake is done.

I am having a lot of fun with this. This week I am hoping to make a small stock pile of toys for the BIG Christmas toy drop. I have a ladybug, doll and alien cut and ready to sew. The doll and alien are both the Black Apple Doll, the alien was cut out of green fabric and will have small antennas.

Toy Society Drop #1

Today I did my first drop. I have had my toy and camera in my purse but I kept forgetting to leave my toy somewhere.

I made Amy Butler's Bed Bug from her book little stitches for little ones. It is the small ladybug. It fit perfect into a sandwich size ziplock bag.

Daphne provided cover from the street and people while I tied my bag to the bench between JoAnn's and Ross this morning. I got to JoAnn's a little before they opened, so I headed to the bench. By 9:58am the doors opened and our toy was tied off and photoed.

We left the store at 10:20am and the toy was gone. With any luck the person who found it will send an e-mail to the Toy Society saying it was found. My toy should show up on the Toy Society blog this next week. My toy is number 810 on the Toy Society Blog.

Today I am going to make my next toy. Also I need to make a few extras for the weekend before Christmas. The Toy Society does a big Christmas toy drop. My goal is to drop 10 toys that weekend. You don't need to have a blog to be part of this great group.

Lunch With Friends

So what do you get when you have Amy, Anna Maria, Heather, Joel, Kaffe, and Sandi all together? One rockin' Bento Box!

This last August I picked up a yard of Joel Dewberry Lime Wood Grain for $5, yeah you read that right, plus 6 fat quarter pack of a mixture of other designers for only $10. All this fabric has been sitting in a pile waiting. Then I added a few from my own stash and the pile grew.

In October I decide I wanted to make a Bento Box Quilt with it. The only think holding me back was ALL THAT COLOR! It was very over whelming. Yea your still reading Dianah's blog. And I just said I had too much color in a quilt.

I started surfing the web to find directions for a Bento Box quilt. I found a cheater Bento Box, part 1 and part 2. I love how every other strip is White. This was the light bulb moment, I still have some Kona Snow that would be perfect for this. Lunch with Friends was started.

Because I still have a few client commitments for Christmas I am only allowing myself to sew one set of blocks a day. I am making of positive and negative block with same fabrics. Which also means I have two of the same blocks in my quilt.

I currently have enough fabric to make a total of 23 blocks. I either need to find more of one fabric to take me to 24 or buy another quarter yard to take me to 25 blocks. My block size is 15 inches finished. It will be a big throw quilt.

I promise to update with pictures this weekend.

I Have A New Cause!!!

Just what I need right. I think this is so cool.

The Toy Society started in Australia. I found them last year around this time. I thought "WOW that is so cool. I wish people here in the States would do something like that." Then the holidays hit, Scott got the job in Iraq and I found out I was pregnant. I kind of forgot about the Toy Society. Shame on me!

Tonight while looking at a couple of blogs I found them again. I filled out the little application and am patiently waiting to hear what I need to do.

I know I need to make a toy, drop it in a public place, and photo it. But I am sure there is more to it.

My goal is to drop something over Thanksgiving weekend. Anyone going to join me is spreading smiles to random people?

I have heard from the Toy Society, I am in!!! I have printed enought letters and lables for 12 drops. I will be poluting our area with toys soon.

I'm Alive!

So I didn't fall off the face of the earth. I am still here. Scott was home, that is my only excuse.

Scott flew in on the 29th of October and life has been a whirlwind ever since. Friday the 30th he spent with the girls, putting in his new TV and recovering from flying. I was able to go to lunch with my cousin Steve that day. On the 31st we head to Old Sac to go on the Spook-o-Motive Train with friends and trick or treating at night. Monday the 2nd was dinner at Lodi Feed N Fuel with 13 friends that wanted to join us for dinner. We had a great time and saw many long time friends. Tuesday was spent to repairs in the back yard. I lost 6 feet of fencing in the last storm and found out that part of the rain gutters were pulling away from the house. Also Scott replace the rails to Delaney's bed that broke awhile back. Thursday the 5th we went to Modesto to drop off a quilt, look for boots and Delaney got carsick before we made it to the water mall.

The second week of his trip was much like the first, CRAZY! Friday the 6th was breakfast at Chuck's, shopping for clothes for family photos, shopping at Ikea and dinner in downtown Sac with more friends. Saturday was up early for photos at Delta College, THANK YOU H for getting us in!, more shopping, me having coffee with Kymn and Scott taking the kids to see his parents. Sunday we went to church for the primary program, then we did some Christmas shopping and ended the day at my parents with Thanksgiving dinner. That night the guys did get my new to me dryer installed, finally! Monday we left for VACATION! We spent the night at our timeshare in Windsor. We had dinner at Johnny Garlics in Santa Rosa and it was amazing, also Scott and Delaney went into the night time pool, hot tub. Tuesday we made the trek to Bodega Bay for Delaney to play in the ocean. Me and Daphne stayed in the car, Delaney and Scott played in the water, it was way cold! We did make the trip back to downtown Santa Rosa to go to the quilted Vine quilt shop, Fabric is running $11 a yard! Which really limited how little I bought, 2.5 yards was $30 with taxes. Wednesday the 11th was spent finishing things around the house, putting up the Christmas tree, and getting out ALL the Christmas decorations.

Today the visit was over. We took Scott back to SFO for him to fly to Dubai and tomorrow he will go to Iraq. His next trip should be in late February.

I have some photos, quilting up dates and an Etsy shop update that will be happening in the next 7 days. So come back soon! Also I am getting the house ready for a dinner party next week. Come back for some sneak peeks.
